LOS ANGELES --  Mindy Kaling is the master of the television rom-com.

But the last time we saw Hulu's The Mindy Project, Dr. Mindy Lahiri and Danny Castellano (Chris Messina)'s love story didn't look much like a fairytale.

Now, after an epic mid-season finale, The Mindy Projectis about to return to Hulu. One question remains: Will they or won't they stay together?

The trailer suggests the latter -- but Mashable chatted with showrunner Matt Warburton about the new episodes, and he promises things won't be as bad as they seem.

Mashable: So last time we saw Mindy, things with Danny were not in a good place. But we did see better times in the episode "When Mindy Met Danny." Why was it important for viewers to see their first encounter?

Warburton:It was actually Mindy’s idea. I think it was a really good one. The previous episode had been really heavy; Mindy and Danny had one of the worst fights we’d seen them have. But the mid-season finale was our Christmas episode. We wanted it to be fun but get us to the really tricky place between Mindy and Danny by the end. We thought we’d visit a happier time, when they were still at odds. We’re seeing them at odds now, but back in the day it was a much more cheerful, fun place.

It just reminds the audience how far both of these characters have come. Mindy's problem was that she was a hopeless romantic who wanted to find the right guy, and Danny was a closed-off guy who never thought he’d have a family. Now Danny wants nothing more to have a big family as quickly as possible, whereas Mindy wants to put [the] fairytale on hold because she loves working so much. They did such a good job of changing each other that they are having opposite problems.

Was it hard for you to show this side of Danny to fans?

We were a little nervous about it. The best sign we got over the course of the first part of season was the audience taking Mindy's side. What that meant to us was that we were being true to Danny's character, showing a new color on him.

It’s the same old Danny he’s always been but I think Mindy has changed to some extent, especially while he was away taking care of his dad. We got to see Mindy standing up for herself, and alone with their kid. Then Danny was back and everything had changed. I think the audience saw that and were just sad that Danny didn’t get to see it. We hope as we move forward we keep telling a kind of honest story about these two people that feels realistic. The fans are great about telling us when we are doing a good or job about that

What can we expect from Mindy’s storyline as she moves back to her own place?

Our intention with these 13 episodes coming up is have it be our 'springtime season.' Fans forget what a fun place Mindy's apartment was. Danny's apartment was cool and dark, with lots of baseball memorabilia, but Mindy's place is funny. This season, she is just her giving herself space to be in, and having Leo now in that space was so fun for everybody. Our team did such an amazing job with it.

You guys had a lot of angry Danny and Mindy fans after the midseason finale. Do you have any comforting words for them?

Yeah, I think so. We showed pretty clearly that these guys are having some real problems, but I will say Mindy and Danny have a kid they both love. Like it or not, they have a rubber band tying them together that will never go away, no matter what happens. I think people will get to see that.

Without giving away too many spoilers, what can you reveal about how Danny and Mindy’s relationship problems will affect the others in the office -- Jeremy, Morgan, Tamra, Jody, etc.?

Mindy is not very good at keeping different parts of her life separate. Whatever is going on between her and Danny is going to be announced constantly. She’ll probably call extra meetings just to talk about it. It will affect every single person not because they want to.

Morgan has a big moment; he considers moving out of his grandma’s house. We're going to learn a lot more about Jody, Colette and their world, and meet another member of their family in a fun way.

Morgan and Jody are also going to have a love triangle with the same woman. Morgan never thought he’d be good enough [for this woman], and Jody is embarrassed the same woman is interested in both of them. The woman is played by Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead.

Since the show has moved to Hulu, it’s definitely gotten edgier -- in a good way. What were some perks and challenges of migrating to this platform?

It's like we have to be our own referee about what’s going too far now. [Before,] we’d try and go as far as we possibly could until Fox told us no. But Hulu loves it, so sometimes we have to be like, "OK, we’re a bunch of perverts. We have to stop this."

It’s been really fun. There are a lot of different ways to be edgy. We know a lot of our fans are younger too, and we don’t want it to be like The Mindy Project After Dark. But I think the stuff that we do that is edgy tends to be coded. It goes over the head of a lot of people if you are too young. We’ll keep inching dirtier and dirtier every day.

Anything else fans should get ready for with the new episodes?

Warburton: I think the fans will like how many fan favorite characters we are going to see again – Peter [Adam Pally], Mindy's parents, the Deslaurier brothers [Mark and Jay Duplass]…we’re lucky in that we have this bench of awesome side characters.
