It's not William Shatner's spoken word cover of "Rocket Man," but it's pretty catchy.

Tesla founder Elon Musk has found himself the muse for a crestfallen new tribute song, dubbed "Elon Musk Is Making Me Sad." Posted on Soundcloud and first spotted by Wired, the track comes from Matt Sharp, former bassist for Weezer and current frontman for The Rentals.

A lugubrious tale of woe, unbridled jealousy and eventual awe, the song follows rival neighbours Sharp and "Musk," from two households, both alike in middle class dignity.

Both boys land a sweet Commodore VIC-20 from Santa for Christmas, but while Sharp uses his computer "to make fake I.D.’s and buy beer in junior high," his "foe studied every bit of that 8bit whore."

This chorus is all of us:

Elon’s making me so sad cause I calculated the math of our birthdates / And I had a head start out of the start gate, two years plus 86 days, but that all went to waste

Talking to Wired, Sharp said he wrote the tribute to Musk after his father passed away — wanting to "get off this blue marble as quick as I could," Sharp's thoughts of leaving Earth drew him to Musk's SpaceX work.

"The small ambitions of a musician, I could not keep my eye on the prize. I watched him fly by, to incredible heights," Sharp sings. "Do you have the power to help me escape?"

Finally, he shoots for Mars.

First boots out on the Martian Floor to proclaim. Oh, that Elon, sent me all the way, son, 139 million miles away.
