The president has picked a very public fight with the league over ongoing player protests during the national anthem played before games, decrying the protests as unpatriotic. At a rally in September, Trump implored football fans to leave games at which players protest, and said owners should respond to players by saying, "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he's fired."  。

Teams across the NFL responded with showings of "solidarity" the following Sunday, though the showings somewhat clouded the original reason for the protests.。
