Donald Trump has apologized to his new Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and his family for "the terrible pain and suffering" they "endured" during the process of his confirmation.

At the official swearing-in event at the White House on Monday, Trump said Kavanaugh had been a victim of "a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception" adding that Kavanaugh had been "proven innocent".

No definitive conclusions were reached during the confirmation process. An FBI report into sexual misconduct allegations made against Kavanaugh, has not been released to the public. But top Democrat Nancy Pelosi has already said she intends to file an Freedom of Information Act request to make the confidential investigation public.

On social media, people took issue with the use of the words "proven innocent".

Kavanaugh said at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday that "the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional." He claimed he was the first justice to have an all-female staff.

He was confirmed by the Senate in a 50-48 vote on Saturday.
