Former First Lady Barbara Bush, who passed away on Tuesday, once had a bit of a brush with TV's Marge Simpson. When the show's team learned that Bush didn't like The Simpsons, she received a letter from Marge and responded with an apology.

"Dear First Lady," Marge wrote in a letter dated Sept. 28, 1990, "I recently read your criticism of my family. I was deeply hurt."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bush once called The Simpsons"The dumbest thing I've ever seen."

Marge talks about her children and about not speaking ill of people – as well as the fact that "dumb" is relative, especially in politics.

The First Lady was touched by this gesture irrespective of Marge's fictional status; as the letter notes, the two women have much in common, including family values and loyalty to their husbands. In her response, Bush describes looking at a plastic Simpsonscup depicting Marge with Homer, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie.

"It is a nice family scene," she wrote. "Clearly you are setting a good example for the rest of the country. Please forgive a loose tongue."

Bush died this week at the age of 92.
