The president has picked a very public fight with the league over ongoing player protests during the national anthem played before games, decrying the protests as unpatriotic. At a rally in September, Trump implored football fans to leave games at which players protest, and said owners should respond to players by saying, "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he's fired."。

Teams across the NFL responded with showings of "solidarity" the following Sunday, though the showings somewhat clouded the original reason for the protests. 。
